Nestled in the placid township in northern Nagpur (India), where Hindus and Muslims peaceably coexist to the eternal rhythms of a bustling life, students wrapped in shawls against the winter chill and wearing crocheted skull caps sit cross-legged, as they rock back and forth reciting verses from Qurans resting on low wooden bookstands. Every waking hour of the day is geared to a learning called Tahfeez (learning the Quran by heart). A Muslim who has memorized all 6,236 verses of the Quran earns the right to be called a Hafiz. In the same campus students are hunched before computers in classrooms, learning vocational courses .They are preparing for very different futures.

He also has ancestral links with Ghauthul Azam Mahboob e Sub’hani Syed Abd al-Qadir Al Jilani; (Baghdad Sharif) hence is also known as Jilani/Jeelani/Gelani. The Centre is also trying to meet the social needs of the community by providing a variety of resources and services that include Nikah Services, Sister’s Ijtima, and Spiritual healing Clinic, Funeral Services, Job placements, Matrimonial Bureau and Ambulance support. It is also undertaking informational campaigns for building awareness among marginalized communities about their entitlements and promoting citizenship skills. The Centre has trained scholars for issuing fatwas (legal opinion on a point of Islamic law).
Maulana Ashraf’s enterprise is a symbol of concerted efforts to make madrasas a medium of wholesome and premium education and increase the resilience of the community. Since the students are schooled in classical and modern science as well as secular and religious thought, they tend to be more connected to their own communities as well as to the mainstream society.This gives them a stable sense of identity, religious and otherwise, and shields them against radicalism. Madrasas, like the Sunni Centre, are thus allies in society’s fight against extremism.
